Research and resilience for cereal systems

In development

The Climate-Resilient Cereals Initiative is an emerging research and programme-development effort focused on improving the resilience of cereal production systems across different agroecological settings.

The opportunity

Millet, sorghum and maize serve important food, income and livelihood functions. Improving resilience requires a combined understanding of crop performance, seasonal and soil conditions, producer constraints, water availability, agronomic services, post-harvest handling and market demand.

Proposed areas of work

  • Agroecological assessment and farmer-centred production diagnostics.
  • Crop and variety performance, including climate and water constraints.
  • Improved agronomic and soil-management practices.
  • Grain quality, aggregation, post-harvest handling and market integration.
  • Research, monitoring and applied learning to inform responsible expansion.

Current stage

The initiative remains in preparation, research dialogue and programme design. Individual research partnerships, implementation sites, resources and delivery targets must be confirmed through appropriate agreements and approvals.

Integration with GetCare programmes

The initiative can draw learning from FAHAP’s producer and field systems and connect to RETS questions about structured production, service provision and market participation.

Partnership invitation

GetCare welcomes conversations with cereal scientists, research institutions, development financiers and implementing partners interested in co-developing a technically rigorous and practically useful programme.
