ABOUT THIS SECTION

A systems approach to local economic transition

The Rural Economic Transition System (RETS) is GetCare Foundation's integrated approach to strengthening local economies and restoring the foundations of long-term resilience. It recognises that productive agriculture, markets, community institutions and environmental stewardship are closely connected.

From survival to structured systems

The starting point is an understanding of household needs, local assets, production constraints, market relationships and environmental pressures. We work with communities and institutions to strengthen organisation, technical services, information systems and access to productive opportunity.

From structured systems to regenerative development

As local systems become more reliable, communities can increase economic participation while improving environmental stewardship and resource efficiency. Our approach supports enterprises and institutions able to sustain value beyond one programme cycle.

Five connected modules

  • Community formalisation: Stronger producer groups, accountable local institutions and reliable records.
  • Production stabilisation: Better agronomy, inputs, services, water management and production reliability.
  • Market integration: Quality systems, aggregation, business relationships and market information.
  • Local enterprise creation: Locally rooted services, value addition and diversified livelihoods.
  • Extractive economy transition: More viable and responsibly governed alternatives in landscapes affected by damaging resource extraction.

Applied through our programmes

FAHAP ↗ strengthens agricultural organisation, productive capacity and markets. RECLAIM ↗ connects restoration with livelihoods and landscape governance. Our research programmes ↗ examine how these components interact and where changes lead to the strongest results.

Learning and adaptation

RETS is applied with attention to local conditions and assessed through monitoring and evaluation ↗. Its value lies in practical improvements to the systems people rely on.
